David Greene never disappoints. This his his third offering as an author and I loved it as much as his first novel, Unmentionables, about slaves who lived and loved during the Civil War era. David tackles diverse genres of writing that at times has taken his followers awhile to catch up with him. But once they do, I can assure you that this book does not disappoint. Like in his first novel, David is an immaculate historian combining the very personal human struggle against the back drop of their times. In The Winkler Case I was most impressed by the clever way he re imagined the classic noir novel, Double Indemnity by placing it in a time, Chicago, 1948, when homosexuals had to keep their forbidden love locked behind closed doors. The struggle of his sweet hero, Elliot Blake to repress his true self is gut wrenching and the story is filled with hot, sexy, suspense. Unrequited love be damned; it makes for interesting bed fellows and the smoldering obsessive desire on these pages is enough to kindle the next great fire in Chicago.

The Winkler Case edition by David Greene Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is an amazingly good read. You won't be able to put it down. I did not see the ending coming!! Do yourself a favor and read this book, you won't be sorry!
Greene perfectly captures the closeted 50's mentality in this gay change-up of "Double Indemnity." Even if you are familiar with the noir film classic, Greene throws some sucker punches that you won't see coming. No overt sex, but Greene's allusions are hotter than a lot of writers' explicit sex scenes.
Really good, fast read. I wish more time could have been spent on the actual love story instead of the lurid aspect of being gay at that time but overall really enjoyed it and glad it was written.... it could have been a bit longer because it seemed to end so abruptly! Maybe there will be a follow-up?
I liked the writing style of this author, felt for the characters and would love a sequel! A little more sex would not hurt either....other than that, a great fast read.
This book is a smart and clever read that does not try to emulate noir. A well written novel that just happens to BE noir. Very sexy and very evocative of the late '40's, this is a page turner. Try it.....you won't regret it for a minute.
The dialog is pretty fun to read because the author is trying out his best Bogart and the characters are sort of fun, interesting and sexy. The plot is thin, as was the movie's, but it's all entertaining and that's all you need sometimes to get from point A to point B.
Great read for the subway!
The author follows the noir recipe of plot twists and roughly drawn characters. It is an enjoyable evening read. Highly recommended if you like the noir convention, Chicago and or gay mystery.
The plot twists are not shocking, and since you are given the map by way of the regular references to "Double Idemnity", you can make easy assumptions about where the plot is going....until the very end. That part is so very classic noir, it was a joy to read.
The characters were a little two dimensionsal, but hewed closely to the characters you see in noir film.
The setting was great, if you are familiar with Chicago, you will recognize every location. And if you are not familiar, well you can certainly imagine any city by a large body of water....and the story would be just as effective.
Please get this book, read it at the beach, by the lake, in your hotel room. Play some slow jazzy songs on the radio and enjoy!
